Language

July 5, 2013 in Design

I got into an ironic conversation the other day over the usefulness of having multiple languages in the world.

I am of the opinion that languages are redundant and they only exist for being the most usable mechanism we have invented for communication so far. Furthermore I believe there is no need for more than one language in the world.

One day, I hope, we won’t even need one.

The irony is, of course, that I was having this conversation in Icelandic.

I am not student of languages, nor am I any good at using them. Icelandic is my native tongue, and I suck at that, and in my day to day work I use English, and I suck at that too.

So I have no authority when it comes to the whole language debate. I simply argue:

If every person in the world each had their own language, what would the world look like?
